Windows desktop install blows up the backups folder

Something else… after instaling desktop v.2.0.10 I noticed that my backups folder had been wiped clean!!!! Luckily I backup all my backups into my NAS regularly but this just caused a gap in my backups from Feb 7 to Feb 23.
Could it be that now you are isntalling into the roaming folder isntead of the local folder? But anyhow installing and update should NOT wipe out the backups folder.

@Jay It appears you released a new windows desktop app, and upon installing it now it again wiped out the entire backpus folder!!! This is something that needs fixing (is not an emergency but it should be fixed soon). My backups folder in my laptop is constantly backed up to my NAS, but many people will not do that, and wiping out their backups folder will remove any possibility of recovery from a failure.

Also, the installation of the desktop app this time took forever (obviously because it was removing a humongous backups folder). I was about to stop it because I thought it had stalled somehow. Luckily I didn’t and eventually it finished.

Wow, that’s really annoying. We don’t have anything in the installer that would make it specifically delete anything, but maybe that’s the default behavior that we need to override. I’ll look into that for the next update. Thanks for popping it back to my attention!

I’m about to release an update so I tested this myself and I can’t reproduce the installer deleting files. The installer configuration specifically does not delete appdata. Do you have an unusual configuration where your appdata is in a different place or something like that?

Jay Yes My AppData folder is in the standard place C:\Users\JorgeD\AppData\Roaming however the Legend subfolder is a hardlink (junction) to another drive M:\Legend

Jay Oh… and the BAckups folder under Legend is also another hardlink (junction) to another bigger drive f:\Backups\Moo.do Backup\Automatic Backups

I want to try the new functionality but Ill have to wait until Ive culled that folder so that I can install the new version without risking losing my backups again.

@Jay It happened again!!! I had refused to upgrade my desktop app precisely because I knew that it would blow up my backups folder. So I was waiting until I ran a culling program I wrote to move my backup files to daily, weekly, monthly and yearly folders.

But now the darn thing updated by itself after restarting the program, and naturally .. it blew up my folder AGAIN!

It not only wiped out all the backup files, but also my daily, weekly, monthly, yearly sub folders!!

I dont understand why the location of my backups is causing the folder to be wiped out with no way to recover it (the files not even go through the recycle bin), and I dont want to go into hard drive recovery tools.

Ugh, I’m sorry about that! I think it might be the hard links, since that’s the unusual thing in your setup. I’ll try setting that up in my Windows VM and see if I can reproduce it.

But on the bright side, since sync is stable now and we have the cloud backups, hopefully the backups are less important these days?

Thanks Jay. I rely more on the local backups than on the backups in google drive, just because I dont pay google for extra drive space and I have plenty locally in my NAS.
