Personal Experience with Legend

I chose to share my personal experience in the Forum with the expectation of giving some USEFUL but NOT positive feedback regarding this product. I also hope that the developer will reach out to me with some sort of response.

In theory, this app is great, but from a practical perspective I, personally can’t use it. Why? I don’t know.

Looking at the first video on the website, https://legendapp.com/ it seems like I could connect my email(s) (I have several) to tasks and to a calendar of my choice. I h8 Google, and I simply refuse to use a Google email account.

My choice is an Outlook personal account for Calendar, (only) and a bunch of email addresses I set up with my domain host provider. These are work emails.

I wanted to set up several email accounts where I can pull emails with assignments ( I get orders by emails) and I want to schedule them in my Calendar and Todo list.

It seems that I need to be a programmer or a developer in order to use this App. With all due respect, I don’t have programming skills and if I did I probably would have developed my own app. It’s frustrating to try to use this app (at least for me) and it seems like this app was designed only for those who are in the development field, and that naturally works for Google, Facebook, Microsoft or any other major company. It appears that the only option is Google Calendar. If that’s the case please let me know so I won’t waste any more of our time.

If that’s NOT the case, I would kindly and respectfully ask the developer to prepare a video with step-by-step instructions on how to use this App.

If you have a product, that it’s limited or the end-users don’t know how to interact with or use it, do you believe they will stick around and MOST IMPORTANTLY will shout out their great experience with the product? You may have a good product, but personally, I don’t see it that way, due to my limited knowledge. (lack of programming skills) What does it take to clear the fog?

onestructural I’m also a user of Mailbird, as @LauraH suggests below. I was already using Mailbird anyway – because it’s an excellent email client – but speaking specifically to your pain point with multiple (non-Gmail) email addresses: Mailbird is the fix to that. You can attach emails to Legend items directly in Mailbird regardless of the account they come from. The integration isn’t the most amazing – someday I’d like to see it get a little more fleshed out to handle things like deleting emails but leaving behind the attachment (which remains but does nothing and gives no hint of where it came from).

As far as the “I personally can’t use it” part…I feel your pain, and I don’t mean this dismissively – but sometimes apps just don’t “click” for some people. There are many out there that I abjectly hate although others rave about them (Trello is a one). The app isn’t objectively “bad”, it just doesn’t really make sense to my mind. I’m no programmer either but Legend did click for me. I just want to acknowledge that your frustration is probably genuine but may not actually be something “wrong” with Legend. Just an incompatibility.

The only option for calendars currently is only Google Calendar. Our Outlook support is only for emails, for now. I can see how that is not very clear, and we’ll try to find a good way to make that clearer until we are able to add full Outlook support.

What else did you find confusing? I know that the app currently a bit obtuse, and we are very shortly going to put some focus into redesigning some things to be simpler and making some introductory videos. Any detail you’d like to share about things that you found confusing or hard to work with would help a ton. We’ll either make those things simpler/clearer or add better help/videos around them.

To clarify one thing about @Jay’s response:
The only EXTERNAL calendar legend integrates with currently is Google Calendar.

However: legend has a built in calendar of its own that works well for scheduling tasks within the app. You can view any item with a date in a variety of calendar ways - agenda, week view, month view, list sorted by date, filtered to show only a certain date rage, etc.

Another thing to add here: Unfortunately, I also find the direct integration for email within Legend to be… not great.

HOWEVER: If your “pain point” - as it sounds from your post - is that managing tasks from email is tough… Stuff comes in via email; but you want to write out a task (not just the email subject line…), link it to a project, make notes… and be able to see a simple “task list” of things to do, easily reference back to the emails if you need to, and also keep project plans, etc. This was exactly one of my big frustrations with trying to manage tasks that are often linked with emails.

If that is your use case: I strongly recommend MAILBIRD and legend together. Mailbird; being a focused email application does a much better job of email management (not surprisingly!). However it integrates smartly with legend allowing you to pop up a side pane and then emails can be dragged anywhere in the legend outline; generating a link back to the original email.

This is the system I use for managing tasks / email and I find it solves what was my major challenge with email and tasks. It’s the only thing I’ve found that fits the way I’d like to work with email. Might be a helpful one for you also.

Fascinating to read such a negative review. - I’m not a developer either and I found Legend one of the easiest apps to get started with, and with the best and clearest “How To” guide I have ever layed eyes upon. 🙂
So Jay… You have a FABULOUS product and it is not hard to grasp or work with at all!
