I’ve wanted a Mind Map Panetype for years.
I never used other Mind Mappers because they were as @Jeff says – just an Outline in a less space-efficient presentation. They’re nice to look at but don’t give me any new insights.
Where A “mind map” could be truly powerful is in representing multiple types of connection between items. Legend lets us connect items in many other ways. Pretty much everything you can filter on: #tags, +contacts, prefix-type, date, etc.) could be a different type of “link” between items.
Imagine a large Pane in Legend that displays your Outline as a conventional Mind-Map, with the parent/child links drawn very faintly. Now, you enter a filter for that Pane: #urgent. The Pane updates by highlighting every item in red that has that tag. Or maybe it draws a new set of lines (in red) connecting all those items to each other. You could do this with any filterable characteristic. Now THAT would take you from a 2D Outline to a 3D Item-space, letting you visualize connections in a truly different way.
I’ve only seen one “mind mapper” that actually did this: mapping multiple “dimensions” of connections between items. But that’s all it did…no way to take the next step and make actionable plans. I don’t remember the name of that app anymore.
