Annoying: When dragging a project between panes to move things around, the project auto expands when dropped. This is distracting, and not at all the expected behavior. When I drag and drop something, I expect it to drop in the same state (collapsed in this case) not change state when dropped.

This could be argued as a ‘feature request’, as expand-on-drop isn’t by definition “wrong” – it could be considered an intended behavior by some.

But it’s annoying to me.

It also happens when copy/pasting.
Is not limited to only Projects; I often get unprefixed Parents that auto-expand when dropped (or pasted). But sometimes they don’t. I don’t know why. I had thought it was actually the Pane re-applying the filter and auto-expanding-to-show-matches, but testing doesn’t bear that out. Having said that, I have also encountered situations where auto-expand-to-show-matches doesn’t correctly expand (leaving some items hidden). So maybe my hunch is actually right but I can’t prove it because of an overlapping bug…

As with anything automatic, having zero control can be aggravating. Often, I tweak a filter (like to show completes) in a mostly-collapsed Pane and the whole Outline auto-expands, completely losing my place.

I dream of a global setting that enables/disables auto expand (for all reasons, including copy/paste and applying filters). That could be paired with a per-pane button/command to manually trigger an auto-expand event. That button would be nice to have even for people who leave auto-expand turned on, since it could be used to “re-expand” a Pane after manually collapsing to hide some matches. Today, I will sometimes quickly toggle a filter off then back on, just to achieve that effect.

I would consider it “wrong”. I haven’t taken it on yet because it’s quite complex (because mirrors make collapsed state really confusing). I think I’ve finally figured it out! And the latest update hopefully solves it.

I think it was happening sometimes because collapsed state is based on the path from the root to the item, so if you dropped an item at the same level it would keep its collapsed state. But if you moved it to a different parent it would have a different path.

Jerud Can you send me a video of it not expanding correctly? I may not be testing every scenario.

I can’t find the pattern. At first, there was absolutely no difference. When I re-test now, some of my parents expand on drop, but many don’t. Any test items I create from scratch work fine. Here’s an example of it not-working:

I copy-pasted that whole parent into my test document and it behaves correctly – although I note that the dates were stripped off the pasted version. But even after I manually added repeating dates back, it didn’t reproduce the bug.

Revisiting this issue…
It’s still here. Dragging an item (a mirrored item in this case) to a different pane, and it expands when dropped. 🙁

Also still-here is the bug with filtered panes not correctly auto-expanding to show matches, which seems to be getting worse, if anything, not better.

It feels like these two have enough overlap – I have almost zero non-filtered Panes – that it makes testing the drag/drop behavior difficult, and the “expand to show matches” functionality is pretty important, so it’d be nice to see a fix for that first, then we can more easily pursue repro on the drag/drop behavior.

It’s been bugging me for several months. As soon as you do a search, you filter the results only on the first level, you have to expand the other elements to see the matches. It’s been requested for so long, before it worked properly.

Sorry for losing track of this! We’ve been focused on improving our state/sync system for a while and that will be done soon 🙂. Then we’ll get back to this one - it sounds very annoying!
