Awesome, thanks, will take a look at beta. In the meantime, I did catch a couple of mild examples of the kind of behaviour I’ve been seeing. Here’s two quick ones… let me know if you need me to try to find more.

Beta feels good. Haven’t seen any instances of the problem in a few minutes of playing around.

It’s still doing some funky stuff if I try to put some quotes around text in the filter box - using home and end keys to jump around the word it seems to jump the cursor back to the end. Feels related to the previous problems reported. Once there’s a few quotes in there, it doesn’t like shift +arrows to select the word AT ALL.

ghuth okay, I have pushed the version to the live page. Since the last one doesn’t seem as serious lets tackle it in three steps.
1) @Jay will get the latest LegendState merged into our code base
2) We will reach out when we put it in beta and have you report back any issues
3) Resolve them before pushing into main again.

I suspect there is something to do with windows way of handling input (especially for HOME & END keys) that we haven’t run into. I’ll mark this thread as solved and circle back with you on 2).

Thank you for sharing the videos, they are quite helpful. I’ll try to borrow a surface laptop to test it.

Thanks for your updates. In the beta thread you said “This has now been pushed to beta and prod” but I’m still seeing issues, at least in prod.

For example

pasting a block of text only to see it immediately vanish
typed a slash, then a space, but my cursor was still stuck next the slash. Multiple spaces, no movement of the cursor.

I’ve check for updates and prod shows 1765573962656: September 1, 6:59 AM while beta shows 1722099014839: July 28, 2:50 AM. I’m not sure where legend state starts and ends, but it doesn’t feel like anything has improved on prod.

This all just seemed relevant to report, considering this is marked “solved” but doesn’t appear to be…

I don’t think I can use the android app in beta mode either, so that’s not ideal. Some issues I saw today on Android

I (swype) typed a word, only to see it instantly deleted (or un-done?) twice in a row.
Backspace briefly not working - also felt like it was undoing the action immediately.

I’m going to stick with beta for now… But yeah… not “solved” from where I sit.

Edit to add:
I just observed a sequence on prod that might help

My cursor was between the n and the e in the word “new” and I bumped the 1 key.
I saw the word “new” expand, then contract (not sure if the 1 was visible or not)
So I was left with the intact word “new” showing on the screen.
I then pressed space, to try to replicate what I had seen
And I ended up with “n1 ew”.

Yonz I appreciate the offer, thanks! I don’t want to waste your time so I’ll spend a little more time trying to rule out my own environment and if that fails, I’ll reach out.

I did have one other drama with my legend documents recently that I had not yet posted about. Perhaps I will do that (in a separate post), just in case it sheds light on this issue.

Just an update… still testing. At this stage, it feels like there’s a conflict between visual changes made locally that haven’t actually been sent back as updates to the server? So I can kind of influence the result of the change based on how I react to it? Feels weird saying that but it makes sense when knowing how the app works behind the scenes.

I decided to turn all browser extentions and apps that I thought might interfere. In short, turning them off didn’t help. I still have a bunch of examples of the same kind of misbehaviour.

Here’s the best example. And it kind of matches what I said above about changes made locally/onscreen/visually instead of at some deeper level.

I deleted three words at the end of a line. They reappeared immediately.
I paused.
The cursor was before the three words that reappeared.
I hit shift+end and the cursor did not move to the end and select the text, like it should have. It’s as if it thought I WAS at the end of the line.
hitting end by itself did not move the cursor either.
I tried both several times.
It felt to me like legend itself didn’t fully register those characters as being there.
I THINK I even moved the cursor elsewhere and pressing end still went to the “imagined” end instead of the true end but I’m not 100% I am recollecting that step accurately.
I instead reloaded to see if text stuck or vanished. It stuck. And now it behaved as expected.
So far in testing this, I’d have tried either an undo which (would not not work). Or I’d try again to delete the line (because the characters were absolutely there).
This occurred in a new document, so that’s not the issue either.
This also occurred with the apps and extensions I had been testing all turned off.

I’ll keep testing. I’m seeing similar behaviour in the android app (deleted a word at the end of the line, it came back) so my best theory at this stage is some kind of caching of a dodgy bit of JS, ie at my ISP? I’m grasping at straws though 🙂

I’m still convinced there’s a problem to fix and I just can’t figure how my environment could be the cause. I just installed a new browser - floorp - to try a firefox base instead of chromium (chrome and edge). I’ve never had this or any firefox browser on this PC.

I just dragged a node from the root near the top of my document to a folder in the same document
I dragged it to a parent folder in the the expanded document window on the left hand side of that same pane.
This node vanished briefly and then reappeared as if I’d never performed the action!

This is nuts.

I’m narrowing in on where the issue lies though I think.

I’ve noticed that sometimes I can be typing and the last few characters vanish to the left of the cursor. However what I do next seems to have an effect on what happens to those characters.

If I keep typing, the characters seem to return.
If I select another line with the mouse, the characters stay gone.
If I use my arrow keys to go and investigate/undo/retype the characters, they stay gone.
if I hit undo, they stay gone (I think).

In addition to that, I’ve noticed the following things will be un-done by the app also

clicking the twisties icon
highlighting or un-highlighting text (ie the permanent blue highlight)
undoing a cut and paste with ctl+z (it reverses the action, as if I had not hit undo)

Before doing all the above, I tried turning on VPN (connected to US and UK) and reloading with “clear cache and hard reload” dev tools feature, to see if maybe there was an ISP level file caching issue. No change.

@Jay I’m guessing this problems might need your intimate understanding of the way things work. Is this enough data to go on? I’ve got a half dozen other records of this type of behaviour I could give you, and I’m prepared to record more videos with the keys pressed showing, if needed.

@Jay and @Yonz I’ve found a way to make the problems I’m facing REAL obvious.

I’d throttled to 1kbps up/down and 300ms for that test. I then tested latency and throughput separately. Low throughput/bandwidth was definitely the primary (only?) issue. I’m in Australia where we use soup cans and string for our internet, so maybe that is why I’m suffering these glitches more than most?
