On or about Aug 20 I was using Legend one evening. It was behaving normally.
When I loaded Legend the next day, a MASSIVE change had occurred.
Symptoms
- Main Main Doc was now full of about 8000 entries in the root. Littered throughout (ie most above but interspersed or below my other content).
- Most of my panes now pointed at an old document. Any Panes that pointed to a nested node still pointed correctly. Any pane pointing to the root of my main document (eg any filtered view) now pointed at this same, older (rarely used) document that pane would have never previously pointed to. It’s the same document that happens to be the default the app uses when I make a new pane (I wish it were possible to change that default, btw).
- After the panic subsided, I eventually determined that my content was still there, seemingly uncorrupted. All of this new junk just seemed to be everything I’d ever deleted returned to the root of the document. It seemed to be in the root, even if it had been deleted from a nested location (thankfully - would have been much worse otherwise!)
- I tried using version history but could not delete anything. It simply refused to go away.
- I then tried manually deleting from the outline view. I could still not delete any of these undead items.
Resolution
- I did a backup and restore to a new document.
- I tried dragging/moving what I wanted to keep to a new (empty) document but this failed.. things vanished as expected from the old content but didn’t stick in the new file. Ie Drag move seemed to fail between docs.
- I then created another new restored copy.
- This time I worked from top to bottom and manually copied the main data I wanted (while also deleting the junk for the sake of clarity).
I’ve worked with that document for about two weeks. First week was fine. Recently I’ve noticed (and reported) this other strange behaviour of random un-doing of small content changes (re-adding a space, or a word I just deleting, or deleting a word or block of text I added, etc). I don’t think the two things were related, but I thought I’d mention that just in case.
@Jay I initially didn’t bother to post about this because were were in the legendary period of darkness 😉. Then I didn’t want to post amidst the excitement of the new partnership (and I was also focussed on this still unresolved random un-doing of content changes).
I’d really like to know what on earth could have happened to cause this frightening corruption of my document contents, as it shook my already struggling faith in the stability of the app/document.
There just happens to be exactly 15,400 “items in document” in that messed up old document. Any chance this might be some kind of limit that caused the app to fail in such a major way? If not, any other thoughts?
