theasset In Options > Display Settings > Options, there’s a checkbox for “Hide icons in inactive items”. If you uncheck it, you’ll always see the heading icon. You can also turn on the vertical lines if you like.
I prefer a cleaner look, so I have both of those off. I always indent my headings, do you? Do you use auto-sizing, or manual? Indenting means I can tell which level it is by its horizontal position:
