When applying a filter, the auto expand and collapse functionality is only applied to the currently zoomed level. It should be applied to the whole document, so that when you change zoom levels, either up, down or to a sibling, the expand/collapse state reflects the chosen filter. I often have to unset and set the filter to get the expand/collapse state I am looking for each time I change the zoom level, usually using the overview panel.
