Consider: I want to see everything (headings, notes, projects, random thoughts…) tagged with “This Quarter” regardless of where they are in my outline.
No problem, search for “#ThisQuarter” and I get an outline with them…. but it’s messy, it shows parents, many of the items I want to see are several levels deep, so they aren’t a neat and tidy list, they’re still pretty ragged, hard to scan, hard to action….
No problem, switch to list view…. and now I have a neat and tidy list just like what I wanted…. but for this particular application, that view also is not real helpful. I can’t expand anything to see children or notes under it, I can’t add items to those I view here or otherwise change anything beyond the title of the individaul items listed….
If we had an additional view that was: List view w/ Children - that would be a handy tool for situations like this!
I’m suggesting this as a VIEW because I could see this almost “focused outline” state being helpful on lots of filters or searches. See only a certain tag (#Today!), and children of items with that tag - letting me tag a project I want to work on with “#today” and then have a simplified list with top level “today” items, but not have to go elsewhere or add more tags to see the actual tasks or notes… see only a certain priority - and be able to see any notes under it; show only projects in a list - and be able to expand them to see children… etc.
(I suppose another “name” or way of thinking about this view would be “Focused Outline” - it’s an outline view… but the “top level” of the view will only be things that match the filter, but items can then be expanded below that… Curious what others think would better clarify the idea. )
To be clear: I am not in any way suggesting this “replace” list view. I use list view AS IT IS frequently, and I really appreciate it for what it is. List View is a perfect tool for “action only” lists. For taking a lot of items and simplifying it into a simple actionable list. I would not want to see that change!
