What is the library that generates unique node ids?

I now have a script that takes a file full of empty nodes and adds to each node a reference to a photo in a folder. I generate the file of empty nodes by pressing the return key repeatedly in an empty document. Instead of making this empty file of node ids by hand, I would like my script to generate the node ids itself by using the same library that legendapp uses.

Legend uses Firebase to generate unique ids, even for the local files - they’re basically a timestamp plus some random bits. But it doesn’t really matter how they’re generated as long as they’re unique. You could use a UUID library like https://www.npmjs.com/package/uuid or come up with your own system using a timestamp and incrementing values.

Just make 100% sure that they are completely unique. If there is ID overlap it could cause some crazy bugs…

I want to make a photo journal of my yard work.

Ok, so I can use arbitrary identifiers for items.

I have discovered that I cannot use an arbitrary id for the doc id. This is the “id” field in the doc and the “o” (I presume indicating the item’s owner) in each item.

If I make a new doc, stop legend, and edit the doc file to change its id to “xyz” then I will have trouble. When I open legend it will find that updated file but it will not show any other available files - as if coming across this strange document has crashed legend internally and it has stopped processing other docs.

If I delete this doc from the files and then start legend, legend will again show all the local files.

If possible, I would like to be able to externally create completely new legend files. For instance take a folder of photos and just produce a legend doc that has all the photos linked as items in a list.

@Jay I found the official script for making ids so I am using that. I now find that if I create a doc file in the docs folder that legend detects it on its own and lists it as an available doc. So I right now my project is at a stable point of development. Thanks!
