Whole-Pane expand/collapse is broken

This used to be a rock-solid feature that has recently stopped working right. I first noticed it a couple updates back, maybe in August? I haven’t figured out repro, but it has stuck around for a while and I use this feature often, so I’m hoping maybe others can chime in.

The expand/collapse caret in the Pane Toolbar is working inconsistently for me:

In a few Panes (not many), it works as it always has: everything in that Pane expands/collapses.
In most Panes, it only has a partial effect: some top-level items roll up but others are unaffected.
And in a few Panes, it has no effect at all.

I generally use Outline Panes. I haven’t noticed any patterns regarding which document the Pane is pointed to or the filters on the Pane. Seems unrelated to whether the Pane is “old” or newly-created.

This is on Windows 11 desktop app, stable.

I’m still trying to figure out repro on this. So far

Emoji might be involved, perhaps in items that are Headings. Could just be a coincidence of how my document is structured.
If text-based filters are applied to the Pane, expand/collapse breaks.
Filters for -is:Heading seems to break it. is:Heading does not, though?
I have seen other filters break it too, such as -is😛roject.
I have seen the app hang when I tried to apply a Heading filter (and only the heading filter – others were fine). It’d get stuck with the Filter Options box open and nonresponsive.
It also may be tied to specific items. I had one Parent that, if I was zoomed into it, it would always break the expand/collapse. I tried renaming it, moving it up and down, changing prefixes, etc. with no impact. I finally just put all its contents into a totally new parent with the same name, and that worked fine. Can’t reproduce but will watch for it to recur.

I’ve noticed it not "collapsing all’ properly after it auto-expands to reveal filter matches of various types.

andrew do you see problems with this function at any other times? I’ve also seen this problem after filtering but assumed it was the general failure of the feature not tied only to auto-expanded filter results.

Jerud This is the only type of situation in which I have noticed the problem. Could be others though.

I’ve seen this type of behavior many times going back several months. The collapse button has never been reliable/predicable for me and I don’t think I’ve ever been able to nail down a repeatable pattern. This is another collapse bug I’ve seen:
