Pasting Images is broken and behaves badly

Pasting-in images seems a bit degraded since switching to Legend. I note the following issues:

1) Pasting in an image is so slow that it appears to not even be working. I’m prompted for which Drive account to upload to – and then absolutely nothing happens. After a few minutes, I’ll see my image in the Outline, with the “Uploading” bouncing dots superimposed.
** 1a)** To be fair, this happened on a pretty slow internet connection. But it’s not acceptable for the feedback that the operation has started to be delayed by so long.

2) Attempting a paste while offline gives no feedback that it’s not working. Legend still prompts for the Drive account, but then just does nothing. Not okay, especially since this is exactly what happens even if you DO have a connection.
** 2a)** Beyond just giving solid feedback that the paste won’t work offline, pasting images should be possible while offline. It’s a bummer to get a bunch of work done offline but have to keep notes to remind myself to circle back and paste-on some images when I do have a connection. This also wrecks my ability to use Legend as a design journal, since I can’t paste in images as I work.

3) Legend prompts me for the sync-to Drive account each time I paste an image, even though I only have Drive enabled for one of the two configured google accounts. With only one account enabled, there should be no prompt.

4) Legend appears to upload pasted images as “image.png”. This seems very unhelpful. They could at least be named with a date/timestamp. I have oodles of these things in my Drive now…

5) Not really a bug, but irritating AF: Once an image is “in” Legend, it’s hard to get back “out” especially to the clipboard. You have to view it in Drive, then download it or re-screenshot it off Drive. Direct “download” and “copy” commands via RMB on uploaded images are sorely needed.

Unfortunately I don’t think any of this is new to Legend? Or were some of these better in Moo.do?

I did some testing and I think #1 is caused by a slow connection. And I was not able to reproduce #3 except for when I was offline. But the experience is definitely terrible when on a slow connection or offline.

I fixed #4 in the latest update - it adds a timestamp now. Unfortunately when pasting an image the only information we get is “image.png” so I don’t think there’s much more detail we can add there?

As you tagged, I think this is low severity so I will come back to it.

Jay Most of this is not new to Legend, you’re right. After the initial wave of issues I’m not really seeing more bugs coming directly out of the Moo –> Legend move.

To be fair this post is kinda both bug report and feature request…that’s my bad. The ‘bug’ part (uploading images on slow connection) happened to me so I went to log it, and it turned (surprise) into a rant.

Also to be fair though, I’m struggling to use the forum to provide meaningful feedback in appropriate formats. I see very little activity here and I’m not surprised why: there’s no clear way that anything here is getting processed or categorized. Ideally, I would have created two posts: a bug report and a feature request, both about uploading images, and knowing that they could somehow be tied to each other by cross-linking, tagging, or similar. But that effort right now feels like it would just disappear down a hole. I also struggle with the way that if a bug isn’t “urgent” the only other tag is “low severity” which is tantamount to saying “if it’s not on fire, it won’t get fixed.”

I also want to highlight Jerud’s Point #5 - no good way to get images OUT of Legend.

Part of why I want images in my outlines is as notes / information / parts of a project… many of those images I end up wanting to paste into emails or other conversations. Since it is such a pain to get them out of Legend; I end up not using images. I end up using a link to an Evernote Note; and using EN to store images. This is not ideal. I’d really love to keep everything together in legend.

Point #6:

When I use Legend in the browser and Legend as windows app I experience some bugs and differences. In the browser: sometimes when an image is shown as text I get the option ‘Show as Text’. It’s already text, so this is strange. When I click ‘Show as text’, nothing happens, but the menu item is changed to ‘Show as image’ as it should be the first time a rightclick the image.

In the windows app: There is no menu item for ‘Show as image’ or ‘View in Drive’, when the image is shown as text.

Jerud It might be helpful to ask Jay to share the ‘bugfix backlog’ of Legend in this forum somehow. Once a bug is posted in this forum and put on the ‘bugfix backlog’ it will stay visible.

I’ll try to fix the show as text and getting images out of Legend issues soon. For getting them out, what would be ideal? Copy to clipboard or save as file? Or be draggable to drop elsewhere?

I’m a bit scattered right now as I’m split between trying to finish the Legend rename process (need to get people over from Moo.do, send a mass email, rename the apps and extensions) while trying to fix the most urgent bugs. I think the most urgent bugs seem ok now, so I’ll try to finish the rename and then I can come back and focus on fixing/improving. I’ve been just scanning the forum and grabbing what sounds bad, is marked urgent, or has a lot of comments, but as activity has picked up that’s become quite unscalable.

I think we should come back to https://forum.legendapp.com/d/97-so-how-are-we-triaging-bugsrequests-in-this-forum to discuss the best way to use the forum. I’ll think more about it today and post a better response there. And let’s focus further discussion about it there to keep it in one place.

Jay For me copy to clipboard will work for me. I can then paste it in Paint.Net for example.

Hi @Jay and everyone, my first post’s here :-)

I loved Legend the first time I’ve seen it, and now I’m on my way of switching.
But there are a couple of things that I think can be improved, so I’ll keep posting here from time to time, trying not to create new topics if it’s possible

When Internet connection drops, I cannot see inline images where I’ve seen them several minutes ago, looks like they are re-fetched from GDrive from time to time. “Full offline mode” (with ability to past images while being offline) of course will cover this, but is it possible to have some kind of long living local cache as a temporary solution?
Why I think it’s important - because when scrolling down some long peace of document my mind apprehends images as kind of signposts about where I’m now. But if they are loaded 2-5 seconds later (or never, if connection dropped), fast scrolling to get into desired place by looking on images is not that useful.
For what I loved Legend from the first glance - is that it is surprisingly fast comparing to other PKM apps (I’ve tried them all, you name it), no lags in navigation, except a couple of situations, as displaying inline images.
I hope this one will be fixed in this or other way in order to keep the feeling of transparency (or trustworthiness) of a view.

I frequently use Legend offline and would be grateful if images were cached locally so they could display when I don’t have a connection.

I also found that many of my image links ended up broken quite easily, and I lost track of a few important bits as a result.

These two issues, combined with a handful of other hassles, led to my ultimately pulling all “notes” out of Legend and switching to OneNote for that content. Sometimes I use Legend to take notes, because it’s stellar for arranging and synthesizing new information – but when that’s done I drop everything into OneNote for organized storage.
