Items disappearing multiple times?

I’m trying to avoid panicking at the moment…..

Last night I noticed that one of the child items of my main document was gone. I went in version history and brought back that “chunk” of approx. 1500 items, then spent the next few hours update it with my lost changes.

This morning the same child item (of 1500 items) was missing again. So I repeated the process of pulling the chunk from version history again and spent time updating everything. I closed down my native Legend app and restarted. Items still gone.

I showed the title bar/menu and performed a “View/Reload”. Now manu of my main document’s sub-items are all duplicated in the outline view.

iOS on iPhone version is showing my documents properly, but with different items. Some are correct, some are not. Order is incorrect.

No matter what I’ve tried, I cannot make anything display in the documents pane in Legend Native. Every board shows no documents, but the outline pane shows items and duplicate items. Here is an idea of what I’m seeing:

I now deleted all the duplicates, made my updated (again), ran a complete backup of everything to file, and restarted Legend. Data seems normal again.

The only thing I’ve done different recently is that a few days ago, I started using some Project-type items instead of all Bullet-type items.

Oh No Sam! I know this feeling of panic. 🙁 I’ve flagged this as Urgent, and I’m going to tag @Jay as data loss issues are a major issue!

Dunno if it’s related - but I’m trying to load Legend on my work computer (Windows) this morning and it won’t load at all. So, I wonder if it’s not something you did, but if something is wrong with the backend….

Edit to add: I’m trying to open the WEB version of Legend and my iPhone - they also will not load. YIKES!

I stopped using legend for a long time because of an issue like this - came into work, sat down at my desk, and Legend would not load. ARRGGG.

Thanks, Laura. Yes, the several hours of restoring backups & trying to remember what I’d changed, then starting over a few times was quite frustrating. I’ve since activated the ‘auto backup’ to google drive,

I didn’t see any other complaints of downtime by anyone at the time, so I assumed the problem was local to my Legend and not global to multiple users (perhaps wrongly on my part).

I’ve had a few occasions of Legend Windows not starting. If I remember correctly, an uninstall/reboot/reinstall fixed it. Of course, that doesn’t help you with your Web version. Hopefully Jay can track down the issue.

SamMarrocco Can you open it in the web version and see if that looks correct? If so, can you try signing out and back in? It sounds like it may be an issue with the local cache. If that fixes it that will be a good lead for me to track that down.

Agree - it’s especially worrisome to have issues, come to the forum and find it silent!

Like now…. whatever is preventing me from logging in must be small / or local to me - because no one else has raised the issue yet! (Yikes!)

FWI - when I’ve had apparently “data loss” issues with Legend - I often check the web version first. If my data is all there on the web, then I know the issue is something connected with data on my local machine. And, while that is still scary, it’s reassuring to see it all correct on the web while I sort out whatever is wrong with my local installation.

They all match currently, and they matched during the issues. When native was missing info, the web and iOS versions were missing it as well

As mentioned, I was forced to restore the missing data from the history since then and manuall update all of my ‘changed since the last update’ items several times. It happened a total of three times between monday evening and tuesday afternoon. Since then it appears to be stable again. As of right now, the web, iOS and window natives apps all match.

SamMarrocco Did you see those missing items in the archived/deleted/moved panes?

I’m trying to find a way to reproduce what happened to you. Was there anything special about that child item that went missing? Had you moved it from a different document or made changes to it while offline?

Well Update on Legend not loading for me:
Turns out this was NOT a Legend problem. (I’m sorry Jay! - and thank you for getting me pointed to the problem!) The issue was with my office firewall. Apparently it flagged something in the Legend connection as questionable and blocked it. 🙁

Thankfully, our IT Dept was accommodating and has now whitelisted Legend for me, so hopefully it doesn’t happen again! It’s been a disorienting day to try and work without my project lists, notes and task manager.

No, nothing special. I’ve had that item and its children (approx. 1600 items) for many months. Lots of editing on those items daily. If it wasn’t for the fact that it happened three times, I’d think I may have accidentally done it myself. But restoring items, making sure they were correct again, then closing Legend, only to find them gone again after restarting rules that out.

The only thing I’ve done different lately is that I recently started using legend’s “projects” item type, to differentiate between item (mainly for lack of color). But I wouldn’t think that could cause this. I started using project types a couple days before this happened.

SamMarrocco You’re right that projects wouldn’t cause that. I’ve been trying to reproduce this but I can’t find a way to cause that bug to happen. I’ll keep looking into it and see if I can find it.

Can you also check that the missing item isn’t hidden by a filter?

If you do see it again can you check the Archived/Deleted/Moved views to see if the missing item is there? It shouldn’t be possible for items to just disappear, so I think they must just be marked in a way that’s hiding them. And that would be a much quicker way to restore them, to just put the one item back.

It wasn’t filters as I don’t use them. To be honest, they’re a bit convoluted for me because of the whole “three-state checkbox” thing, so I do quick searches to find things instead and rely on my organizational skills to place things where I can find them quickly. I also don’t “checkbox” items. I delete them as I perform items to keep my document as thin as possible. For me, my docs are “what I need to do” as opposed to “what I’ve already done”.

So I’m certain I didn’t have any of the items ‘filtered out’. Plus, I belive that even if there had been a filter, when I re-entered the info from the backup, the filter would have made it disappear before I closed Legend, and I’m certain i verified that my data was correct again before I closed Legend and lost it twice more. Odd.
