There’s so much going on in Legend that at least some of the defaults are going to be trouble for each of us. I’m always like, “who on earth would actually WANT that?” Turns out…lots of people! I think it’s great that you’re playing with the options and trying everything out, that’s the only way to get it all working the way you need.
I’ve only recently started using GB-Panes, after many years in Legend. I couldn’t “get” them and still struggle to. Even since I first posted this thread, I’ve learned a lot about how I can use them. For example, the behavior of seeing what is essentially an Outline Pane when zooming down into a Project – what I originally fussed about above – is today an important part of several of my Workflows. Literally in the last 2 weeks I changed how I see this issue, after all these years. It definitely makes me feel like I’m the one who isn’t very bright.
What you’re describing above though – that’s a great question. I see it your way; it makes no sense to recursively see the item you’re zoomed into within its own set of groups. Because that one group would then, itself, contain a duplicate of every Project in that Pane, all of which already have their own groups. It doesn’t seem useful. Whenever I think that though, I find someone that can explain a use case which relies on it…so before I cry ‘bug’ I’m hoping someone else will jump into this thread and weigh in.
I’m (gradually) assembling a comprehensive set of ideas for improving the less-used Pane types. I don’t want to just toss them each out as single ideas because it would make more sense as a package. That’s why I posted this thread (and some others) – to see how people are using these panes and what they’re running into. I want to try and come up with some minimal suggestions that make these panes more learnable, powerful, and useful – without shutting out anybody who is already making use of them.
