the new filtering dialog replaces the item-editing bar, yet is missing the “hide editing tools” v button. So to dismiss the dialog after filtering, one must tap back into the item editor in the (now very small) outline, then dismissing the keyboard which replaces the filter dialog.

Phew…. after a month of being off world from this forum I was excited to see the activation of the new filtering functionality. I’ve spent the last hour and a half just reading through the threads to get up to speed and still haven’t finished. I will be posting gradually as I get the to the end of it.

I love all the changes and how it feels, it brings all the power we’ve been craving for a while!! Congrats @Jay this is a great addition.
I only have one problem. The double clicking behavior to go from show to hide action in the filtering buttons. In the windows app and in the browser it’s usable, but in the android app is totally unusable to me. I keep double tapping to change the filter behavior and can only randomly get the red button to activate!!!

I much preferred the single tap (single click) behavior, in which one tap turns the filter on in show mode, a 2nd tap switches it to hide mode and a third tap turns it all off. It’s simple and doesn’t waste time. The double tapping has become excessively frustrating to the point I hate to use it in the android app. Jerud seems to be happy about it, but perhaps it works better in IOS than in android.

andrew I was imagining a narrow 2nd row, same height as curent one. But yeah jumping the whole pane down when you show it would be disruptive. I think it could be made to work nicely with the right tweaks but I was just wondering your initial thoughts.

Jay It makes more sense now, but some things still seem puzzling… Basically, if I filter on “four or five”, and there’s a “five” somewhere on the page, I’d expect to see it, regardless of the “collapse matches” setting and whether it has a “four” parent.

If I filter on “four or five”, with “collapse matches” on, I don’t see any “fives” when they are children of “fours” - the “fours” get auto-collapsed, even if they had initally been expanded. Items that match one term are auto-collapsed, even if a child of theirs matches the other term. (This doesn’t happen if a child matches the same term as the parent).

With “collapse matches” off, I don’t see the “five” if its parent “four” had been initially collapsed - the matching “four” doesn’t get auto-expanded even though it has a child that matches. I see the “four”, because its collapsed non-matching parent “three” does get auto-expanded to show it.

Jeff It wasn’t calculating self-match correctly with or operations. Those things should be working better now.

Jay Ok, looking more like something I can understand. I also realized I can put it in list view to not see the whole hierarchy, and only see the matches, so that’s good, for example just to see all tasks and nothing else. Also doing that will require all “and” terms to be in the same item/line, rather than anywhere in its hierarchy. Probably that’s been mentioned here, but could be something for the help file.

If I switch from outline to list view with the filter on, it seems like the line that had focus, and sometimes some other random non-matching lines, will be visible, surrounded by dotted outlines. Then they disappear after a few seconds. Is it meant to be that way?

Also, if I find something with the filter on, it would be nice to be able to select it, or put the cursor in it, and have it keep focus and scroll to it when I clear the filter.

BUG: A search with “date:none” as part of an “or” search is being ignored.

If I search for: is:task and (date:today or date:overdue or date:none)
Then tasks with no date are not showing up.

Jay Feature: New filtering features work in global search too

Since we can now use the new filters in a global search (which is great!), is there anyway to create a pane that will apply the filters across documents (i.e. globally) and let them all appear in the same pane?

I suppose this won’t be an issue when Jay redoes the backend and effectively gets rid of separate documents (I think that is in the pipeline, right?), but is this possible right now? I have some tasks scattered about in different documents that would be great to see all in one place. Short of merging all my documents or waiting for the new backend, are there any options for a global pane?

webalstrom It’s not possible now, but yes it will be possible with the new backend. There’s some major technical reasons that make it very difficult to view all documents in one pane right now, but it will be a non-issue in the new backend. I’m focusing on fixing bugs and working on growth this month so it will be at least a month until we start beta testing the new backend though.

Jorge I mostly work in windows desktop and it’s nice there, unless I start to think about it too much 🤔

I don’t filter in mobile often, but when I have used them in iOS it’s been predictable – except for one thing that can be real frustrating: If you have an existing blue filter, then turn it off and quickly turn it back on, you get a red filter. That doesn’t make sense to me; after returning to the off state I expect to ‘start over’ in terms of the double-tapping. One tap took me to off, so the second should go to blue. But it’s interpreting the double-tap as a request for a negating filter.

This can be very annoying when coupled with the teeny tiny buttons. Even on my new phone with (slightly) larger screen than my old 8, I often accidentally turn off a filter I meant to leave on because of bad aim. I then try to quickly restore it but end up with a red filter instead…it adds insult to injury.

BUG, but not sure if related to new filters.

Creating a numlist within a note has stopped working. I probably use this no more than once a month, so it’s likely to have broken due to filter changes, but it’s possible it was from just before they pushed out.

Completing a Parent dims it, but doesn’t display the dashed lines around it, and it will not auto-hide even if moving focus to another Pane. Changing Boards or toggling a filter will cause the Pane to update.

Completing a parent with a default filter of incompletes produced the same error, the parent and its children are dimmed but on’t disappear from view.

It’s great that it can be used in global search! I noticed a small issue, that if you use “or”, then “or” is highlighted in the search results if it happens to be there, including as a part of other words. I think it’s just a cosmetic glitch, it doesn’t look like it’s actually returning results for “or”.

Jeff I can see the same thing as @Jeff inputting “or” in the filter doesn’t find anything. The counters at the bottom remain the same.
Inputting “or ” does find all the words ending with “or” and followed by a space.
Inputting “ or” does find all the words beginning with a “or” and trailing a space
Inputting just or without the " does exactly the same thing as “or”

It’s not possible to use creation/modification dates in filtering or search, is it? It would be great if it was! I could really use a modified-after:date filter right about now…

Jay Both of Jerud’s bugs are happening to me, FWIW.

For me, the not-hiding-completed only occurs if the completed item is a parent of at least 1 other non-completed item AND oddly if I have at some point since applying the filter clicked on the item to put it in edit mode. This happens whether I click the complete box while editing or after changing focus to another item.

I guess a key question is should children that are not marked complete but with a completed parent be shown in a -is:complete filtered pane? Goes to the inheritance issue, but common sense would suggest that they should be hidden. It looks like other exclude (or negated) filters hide children of an item that matches the exclude filter (so doesn’t pass the filter), even if any child item does not match the exclude filter (so does pass the filter).

Thanks for the help reproducing that andrew and Jorge! Fixed in the latest beta.

Jorge This is a bug caused by mixing quotes and parentheses which I never thought to test. It’s a tough one and I’ll need to rewrite a chunk of the parsing process so I’ll try to get this one fixed by tomorrow.
