I have recently started using the Open in Popup Pane command to do what webalstrom is describing, where I filter my outline to exclude “plain” items which I use to contain reference items and then Open in Popup Pane to see all these related details. This works since it opens in the poup without the filters and without the overview pane open. I also find this useful because I have used the Display Settings to hide all note previews (the single line beneath the item… removing these has dramatically improved task visibility for me and reduced clutter and mental fatigue of scanning through my task lists, as well as improved mobile usability) and viewing in a Popup allows me to see the note as well as all children.
That said, it would be great to be able to have an Open in New Pane option that works like Open in Popup Pane, i.e., where the filters are reset and the Overview is closed (right now, Overview open state is same as the original pane).
Finally, the Open As Outline hotkey opens the pane at the end of the board rather than next to the original pane. It should open the new pane immediately next to the original pane, as it does when invoking from the context menu.
