Mirrors bug mega-compilation (from Slack)

I’ve started on mirrors not working right with filters, and it seems like I’ve solved it. But I’m building up a suite of automated tests for filtering to make sure that pane items are always as expected based on the view and filter, so fixing this doesn’t cause other bugs. So I’ll just take a bit of time to keep adding more tests and make sure it’s right before releasing it.

REALLY looking forward to a filter fix!!
Just ran into this again - trying to set up a different view of my stuff, so I mirrored a node, viewed the result in list view … only to discover that the mirrored node isn’t showing in list view as expected. At the “original” - list view, filtered for tasks, shows me all the tasks no matter where they are in the hierarchy. At the mirror - only the top level items are shown. Unexpected and frustrating.

Looking forward to the mirrors and filters fix!!

The filter fix is in the latest update. I think it fixes a bunch of the issues. Does it seem like it works better now? Are there any cases I missed?

Jay the mirrors / filters fix doesn’t appear to be effective for me. Mirrors continue to display in my Panes when they don’t match the criteria. Tested with complete and priority filters.

I think this is actually the “opposite” problem from the original bug, wherein the mirrors would NOT show even when they DID match.

Can you send me screenshots showing the problems? I’m trying to reproduce it from your description and can’t find it.

Also not correct for me. Same behavior as Jerud mentions, but I tested it with dates:
When I filter panes by date, mirrored items are showing no matter what - even when they don’t match the filter.

Edited to add: I’m seeing this with all filters. Any mirrored item appears in the pane no matter what the filter. Mirrors are showing with no respect to the filters at all.

In future should feedback on updates go in the updates thread and we let you move them when you see them? Or should we reply in the thread that generated the fix in the first place?

Apparently this does not affect all mirrors. Attached screencap shows that many of my complete mirrors do actually hide when the complete filter is activated. What differentiates between the ones that stay and the ones that go is not clear on the surface, but my money is on it being whether the item is an “original” or an “instance”.

Assuming (plz let me know if this is correct) that the tally box always displays the “original” item first, It appears that the mirrors which aren’t hidden are the ones which are ‘instances’ and their ‘original’ is in a different document. I have not yet found a counter-example to disprove that in my own docs.

Please note also that the tally box displays the other instances in “link” style which is confusing AF.

The mechanism of “originals” keeps coming up. Are there any other options for handling them? I know this is simplistic to suggest but what if you had a hidden document (invisible to user) which was simply a container for originals and thus every mirror in a user’s document was just an instance because all originals are tucked away and inaccessible?

I’m seeing that even if the original and the instance are in the same document.

So tested the first scenario that I described and it is now working, but my second scenario I mentioned with the link being filtered is still not working.

Some extra detail on mirror behaviors related to drag/drop.
Several of us have reported items that “disappear” when dropped in a new location. In some cases this can be explained by mirrors not responding correctly to filters, but not in all.

I just dragged a non-mirror item to a position below a (non-parent) mirror item. None of them were “inside” another mirror. The dragged item seemed to “disappear” when I dropped it – but by happenstance the “original” of the mirror was visible in another pane and I noticed that the dropped item appeared below it at that location! The dragged item itself was not a mirror and wasn’t inside a mirror – but the ‘drop’ location was immediately after a mirror.

So this means Legend is treating non-original mirror instances less like instances and more like shortcuts – or perhaps I should say wormholes – back to the original. This is definitely not my understanding (or desire) for how mirrors should work.

That’s the same bug I described in: Moving a mirrored item sometimes moves it to the wrong place, and maybe the same as the three reports mentioned above in “Dragging mirrors doesn’t always put them where they are dropped.” I’d vote for that as the next mirror bug to be fixed. Not being able to re-order a list of mirrored items prevents me from using mirrors for what I mainly want them for: reproducing an essential feature of Things 3, which has a “Today” list that mirrors items from various projects and lets you rearrange them in the order they’ll be done today.

Just found a new Mirrors bug! As if we needed more! For bonus points, this one involves Gcalendars to make it extra heinous.

If a mirrored item is scheduled (synced event to Gcal), Google Calendar will receive multiple separate events – one for each instance of the mirror.

I edited the item to change which calendar it was in, and the result was that the item itself didn’t change but one of the Gcal events disappeared. I then made the same change, a second time, on the same item and Gcal updated to correctly show the event in the new calendar.

FYI I reverted the filtering fix from a couple weeks ago because it was causing a crash for at least one person who had recursive mirrors (the mirror referred to itself somewhere in its tree). And it didn’t seem like it was a full fix anyway…

I think the best way to solve it is a fundamental filtering algorithm change, because the current algorithm just doesn’t work well with mirrors. I am working on figuring that out now, so hopefully we can get that fixed soon!

Jay ’That’s an interesting one…what would be a use case for a recursive mirror? I can understand and have had cases for bilateral mirrors but not a strictly recursive one.

So @Jay here is another weird mirro bug.
Given a mirror that I create in Document 2 that points to the original in Doc 1. This was setup in the windows desktop app. When I look at it in the desktop app everything behaves correctly, and in a board with 2 panes (one for each document) the mirror in document 2 displays like a mirror.
However, when I open the same board in an incognito window in a browser with the same 2 panes Doc 1 and Doc 2. The mirror in Doc 2 doesn’t display as a mirror, it displays as a link.

So this causes all kinds of questions and was driving me bonkers because the totals below were not coinciding by a lot, so I thought I had lost data or was facing corruption.
1) Is my desktop app data inconsistent? usually the incognito browser is the one that reflects what the online database contains, ergo the correct one.
2) Is it just a display error from the browser?
3) Which is real and which is wrong?

When in the browser I Alt Drag the item again into the same destination parent, then it correctly creates a mirror, and the previous entry continues to show as a link to the original item.

I have logged out and back in in the desktop app and keep getting the same result Mirrors display in the desktop app and a link is what is displayed in the browser app.
