A new method of email pane?

andrew Same here, I also would have expected that this new email pane uses the email account settings. Clearly it is not the case yet. Gmail constantly asks to sign in, annoying.

Another way to open the email when clicking in the outline is to have a flyover pane from the right covering 70% if the screen, like a peek pane. When peek pane looses focus and user clicks on underlying panes it is closed. Much like the popup pane. The popup pane you have to close using the [x]. Maybe just change the popup pane to allow clicking anywhere besides the popup pane makes it close. Also a shortcut key to open the popup would be nice to have.

I think you have to have multiple ways of opening the email. Maybe in combination with ctrl shift alt keys to trigger one of the options.

Jay One question I’ve come up with: should clicking a link open it in the nearest pane and create a new one if there isn’t one already? Or should it open in a popup pane? Or should it do different things based on whether shift/ctrl etc… are held when clicking?

Options via shift/ctrl and/or setting would be nice, but in particular it would great if you can keep an instance of Gmail open in the background (once a Gmail pane is initially open) so that you could just use that pane to show the email message without reloading Gmail. We discussed this a while ago and it sounded like there was some issue, but if this new approach allows for that, that would be very helpful in terms of speed.

andrew Hmm that’s odd that it makes you sign in again. Is it a Workspace account or a regular Gmail account? I’ve only tested with regular Gmail so far but I’ll test with some company accounts to make sure. How many accounts are you using in the new email pane?

I like this idea of a flyover pane. The popup panes are fullscreen and require clicking the close button because without that it was too easy to close them, and any work done there of navigating was lost. But I think maybe we can revisit that. Maybe a flyover would be better for that usage too? And maybe we could have them just minimize so you could click to restore?

I think as this stabilizes and works better for everyone an optimal usage will become clear 🙂

Jay I like this idea of a flyover pane.

There are times when I want the email message view visible as reference when editing an item in another pane, so whatever solution you go with, there should be a way to do that.

Hmm, trying to debug this re-signing in further… Is it asking you to sign in every time when you re-open the app? Or is it just when you click links in documents? After it asks you to sign in could you try opening the overview and clicking on the account there? Does that take you to the inbox or does it ask for signin? If that takes you to the inbox it may be that the links are formatted wrong.

Drag/drop from new email pane to outline, does not refresh the outline pane immediately. I have to switch to another board and back to make the dropped email appear in the outline pane.

This works for Gmail and opens a browser. For Outlook Business no option appears to open in browser. It opens Gmail instead, haha.

Maybe re-brand this ‘Open in Gmail’ to ‘Open mail in browser’.

Right now I cannot see if the email in the outline comes from Gmail of outlook business. Maybe a colored envelop can help here. red = Gmail, blue =outlook business, Maybe configurable like tag colors.

@Jay Why can’t I sign in to Gmail in the mobile app now? I go to through the login process but the “Please sign into” message remains and the inbox isn’t loaded.

Running beta with update 23-11. When the email is coming from gmail is opens a new pane with the correct email. When the email is coming from outlook business, a click opens a new pane with the inbox, not the exact email.

Eik Is this still not opening correctly in 2.2.2? I’ve been testing it with many outlook accounts and it looks to be getting it right now. If it’s not could you possibly share a video with me? By DM if you want to keep it private?

And is anyone else having any remaining issues? It seems pretty solid in all of my testing. There are enough people who are unable to use the old email panes that I’d like to release it to stable soon if it’s working well for everyone.

Jay Now that you’ve fixed syncing, I thought I might resume use of Beta.

Unfortunately, when I switched to it I got reverted to an old Board structure.

I noticed the new 2.2.2 desktop app and installed that to see if it fixed things: all but two of my Boards came back but two whole DOCUMENTS were completely obliterated. One board that had pointed to a now-missing Doc got re-pointed to another Doc (it’s always the same one, and I don’t know why). The other board (naturally it’s my most complex and often-used one) got fully wiped out. Also, two old long-deleted Boards resurrected themselves.

The web app remained intact except for the two wiped-out Boards.

Ugh, I thought we were past this 🙁 Every time I attempt to participate in Beta I lose anywhere from an hour to days just in recovering from the effort to switch. Until I have a chance to move all my content to a fresh account. It’s no longer worth the gamble of trying Beta and I’ll have to stay in stable long-term.

Boards are now explicitly called out on the Loading… screen. Does that mean Board definitions are saved in a discrete file somewhere, and does that in turn mean I can restore from a “backup”?

andrew Oh yes, that’s definitely the problem. And that’s the first I’ve heard of that… Ugh.

Even if I fix that for now, that’s going to break the current mobile Gmail pane completely because it depends on the basic HTML version. So I guess we’ll have to move forward with doing the mobile email pane in a similar way to the new desktop email pane.

Jay I was able to tap “Not Now” and login so that should hopefully work until January. Maybe longer since it just says it won’t be supported, not that it will be shut off.

The latest Gmail mobile web implementation is not bad, though not fully featured as the mobile app.

How about getting the Gmail add-in working again, so it would be available on mobile and desktop and would be a viable option?

Not sure if this would be possible, but in the new email pane, it would be nice if you could somehow drag an open conversation into another outline pane (e.g., drag from the header of the conversation or some other element that could be made draggable, even in the pane header), so that while you are reading a conversation you can add it to a document without having to close it and drag from the inbox. Often I’ll drag it in to the outline and then modify the outline based on the contents of the email, including copying and pasting text from the email.

This is mostly relevant when you don’t use “split pane” mode in Gmail so you don’t see the inbox when in a conversation. I actually prefer to not use split pane mode in Gmail, and when using Multiple Inboxes view, you CAN’T use split pane. Plus in Legend, it is helpful for the conversation to replace the inbox so I don’t need as wide of a pane for Gmail.
