Plain YouTube Links

Is there a way to make YouTube links appear just like any other links, either singly or across the board? Maybe I’m just simple, but I liked the way that it was, with all the links behaving the same.

I agree - I don’t want YouTube links to automatically open the video inside my documents. Especially in the desktop app. In the browser, I have a lot of anti-tracking, ad-blocking, and cookie protection etc., so it’s not so bad. But I don’t want the desktop app to start acting like a web browser, without that. If I put links like that into Legend, it’s just to collect them like bookmarks - they should open in a new tab in the browser.

In my documents, youtube links are still appearing as links. In order for them to show/play inline, I have to right click the link and select “show video”.

I agree with the comments above for my own workflow, but I’m not worried about the addition of the inline video functionality as long as it’s optional. Am I missing something?

ahp I tried it in the desktop app, and as soon as I paste a link, I see a video - and get all kinds of other connections, like to Google advertising (doubleclick.net) and so on. I tried it with both the Beta and release versions of Legend. I don’t get the option to right-click on a link and select “show video”. Now I have to figure out how to clear the cookies and storage from Electron…

Jeff Well, that is odd. Here’s a loom video of how it works for me. I haven’t edited any settings, but don’t see one specific for inline/link options for youtube videos.

Ok, update is out.

Disable the “Embed YouTube Videos” option in the General section of settings to stop it embedding by default. And you can now right click to the left or right of video items (so we don’t disable the useful menu on the video itself) to show them as text.

Jeff If you really want to delete the cookies and storage, that’s in ~/Library/Application Support/Legend on Mac and C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Local\Legend on Windows. You can delete the whole folder (except backups and docs folders if you want to keep those), but that will reset the app so you’ll have to login again. And be sure you’re online and any offline changes are synced before doing that…

Sorry about that! We added that feature mainly to be able to embed the video in our help page. I didn’t expect so many people to be wanting bare YouTube links. It’s currently using the “Show images inline” setting for whether to embed them, which is why it’s different for some of you. I’ll add it as its own setting and release an update shortly.

Jay Thanks, that fixes it for me. I did find a bunch of youtube/google cookies etc. in the Legend folder, so I followed your instructions to delete the folder and reset the app, then replace docs and backups. Later I saw a button Settings > Support > Debug > Clear Local Data. Does that do the same thing?

Anyway, that all worked, but uncovered a nest of other bugs in the process… see Unable to trash an encrypted document.

Could you implement the same thing for images – not just to convert from inline image to link, but also to convert back from link to inline image!?🙏 (as requested here: https://forum.legendapp.com/d/412-improving-image-support)

By embedding means that Legend is only storing the link in its databse and the embedding is just visual right? No videos are being physically stored in our local database even if we have embedded on?
