Some item notes are blank

Other relevant info…. on desktop, I just created an item, pasted in a note, looked at the item in mobile and found it had a caret next to it as if it had a subitem (it did not and when I tapped the caret it did not reveal any subitems). When I opened the note window for the item on mobile, the notes were empty. Checking back on desktop, the notes on the item were empty.

It’s as if the newly created note is being treated like a sub item on mobile, and thus the item has no note. And it seems that when I select it for editing and go into the note editor, the empty note gets synced back to desktop and overwrites it? Just a guess.

andrew I just released an update which fixes notes not being immediately displayed when added remotely, and fixes some miscellaneous things that might be related. It also adds some more information to a log I see in our error reporter which might also be related.

Can you try opening in an incognito window and see if the notes are there? That would suggest it’s a local caching problem.

I’ll work on the version history some more now to fix the errors with restoring notes.

When I look into my history of Legend beta, I see a lot of deleted notes, which I definitely did not remove myself. Maybe related to this issue?

Are the notes still there in the stable version?

Jay Well, I do not dare to switch to stable, because of some bugs switching between stable and beta in the past regarding the boards… Now is not a good time for me to switch to stable and fix boards by hand.

What I do see in beta is that I have only 1 note left (using filter by note). When I try to open it an error dialog is shown.

Understood about switching to stable. Can you try opening beta in an incognito window and see if the notes are there?

Oddly, I don’t see a matching error in the error reporter. Are you on the latest version of beta? You can find that by clicking Online in the sidebar or the cloud icon in the top right. It should have updated yesterday and be 1690776651922.

Jay Opened beta in private mode on edge. Using the latest version in edge. All the notes are still gone, but the 1 that was left, I can open without problem.

The same note cannot be opened in windows legendapp 2.1.0 running latest version of legend.

When I look into history on private mode edge, I see this. Lot’s of deleted notes I did not delete myself.

I just looked at the version history on my personal account on beta and I’m seeing notes appearing twice, 1 deleted and 1 added. So the version history may be doing something weird - I’m working on fixing up version history and I’ll look into that. Are you seeing any Added notes when you scroll through it?

Jay Yes I see added notes in history, but not added by me. But I also seem some strange ‘changes’ in history. Also not changed by me.

Eik I found the problem. It looks like (somewhat ironically) the Version History was sometimes deleting note items from documents. I’ve got that fixed and am working on fixing restoring notes. So I’ll release an update shortly where you can recover the notes.

Eik The latest beta version fixes the bug that was deleting notes and also fixes version history so it works much better. You should be able to pretty quickly restore all of the deleted notes now.

Jay I’ve restored my notes, but had to do it one by one. No problem for me, because the number of notes in my document is low, but I imagine if you have hundreds of notes, it will take a while…

Whould be nice to have a filter in the history pane to show ‘deleted’ only and then ‘restore all’

Ah great, I’m glad they’re back and that wasn’t too much trouble! A restore all button could be a good idea… I’ll add that to my todo list. But hopefully as things stabilize, needing to restore would not be a common occurrence 🙂

Restoring notes one by one is a massive undertaking for me. And in some cases I have created new notes and will have to resolve conflicts somehow.

I did a test restoring one note, and noticed that after that, older versions showed that the parent item was both deleted and had changed text and that the corresponding note had been moved from one to the other, as if a duplicate was created, the note was moved, and then both were deleted. Wondering if this is related to the cause of the deleted notes.

Ugh, I’m so sorry about that andrew! Unfortunately the bug was removing the parent from the note item so there’s no way to automatically restore it, because it wouldn’t know where to restore it to, especially if you’ve got new notes and conflicts. On the bright side, I’ve now put a whole lot of extra safety and checks around removing item data so it won’t be able to happen again.

Jay I just tried restoring a missing note, and when I do, the note appears with the original item as expected BUT when I exit the Windows app and run it again, the note no longer appears. I do it see it on mobile.

andrew Hmm, I can’t figure out a way to reproduce that. It showing up on mobile is a good sign though. I think the previous bug put your cached local state into a weird place. Can you try signing into an incognito window and see if it looks right? If so, you can sign out of the Windows app and back in, and everything should be good.

Jay I finally found some time to sit down and go through Version History to try to restore deleted notes. When I restore a hunk that contains a lost note, the note appears in Windows desktop and then appears in mobile and in an incognito web browser instance. But then if I close the Windows app and re-open, some (but not all) of the notes I just restored again disappear from the current document (in all instances) and re-appear in the Version History as Deleted.

I signed out of the Windows app and back in and tried again but with the same results.

Could the Version History process still be deleting notes? And why the notes that it just restored?

I don’t know why it is only affecting some notes… maybe depends on what version history entry I open or some other random timing thing. It’s possible it could be that the problematic notes have HTML. But can’t say with any confidence.

So I am still stuck not being able to restore many notes that were deleted… very frustrating!

I signed out and cleared the site data to try to totally reset the cache. Now when I select an entry in Version History for my main doc, the Windows app freezes on the Loading animation. Tried in incognito browser window with same result.
