Dragging
I found @LauraH’s post and I’m pretty sure she was indeed talking about reordering Panes, not adjusting widths. AFAIK there aren’t any side handles at all, you just grab the pane-edge (not possible on the last pane of a wider-than-screen Board).
Pane Header
I would love to see filters moved down a row. If you add a discrete ‘grab bar’ at the top, too – brilliant. To maintain context when scrolling down, perhaps make the Zoom Header “sticky” similar to mobile? Just leave it as a header instead of sending it to the toolbar. Maybe reduce the size by shrinking the immediate parent’s font so it’s just plain breadcrumbs, and hide the Notes?
I have done all I can to “turn off” Zoom Headers with CSS/theming. Since I’m completely unskilled in that department, I only got the Huge text to go away, but I’m left with some whitespace and the breadcrumbs…still an improvement. Wish I were clever enough to figure out how to fully turn them off. But I understand they are valuable to many others.
- In an unnamed Pane, I think full breadcrumbs are great. They’re clear, explicit, and helpful for staying oriented, especially when you’re learning the app. I intentionally use un-named Panes sometimes when I’m moving around a lot in my Outline, for this reason.
- Yes, this lines up with my experience perfectly. For users who want both a name and breadcrumbs, there’s still breadcrumbs in the Zoom Header.
- I don’t like UI elements that move without me telling them to. Bonus to not having toolbars adjust/move: today, an unnamed Pane’s Header is “shorter” than a named one which can make Boards ragged-looking. If you do these changes you’ll fix that as a happy byproduct.
- Not sure if the ‘text’ portion of the Filter bar should always be full-width or if it should resize as needed…seems like resizing is unnecessary and simpler to skip, if it’s not too ugly? Maybe the text content of the filter could have a muted color background, until it has the focus for editing?
- The space taken up by a second Header row is small compared to the massive space consumed by Zoom Headers. I’d much rather see the changes above – which have a lot of functional and aesthetic value – then, address the vertical space complaint by granting control over the size/content of the Zoom Header.

Awesome, I’ll look at the library and try to find some more helpful suggestions. Wow…there’s a LOT in there!
Popups
I’m super excited to see popups exit the “half-finished” stage. You’ve opened them up a LOT by fixing 7 ½ bugs and 2 feature-requests I had in my queue! I build static-Boards-as-workflows, so I don’t like inserting Panes for temporary needs. Popups let me branch off on-demand and then return to where I left off, so every improvement makes me substantially more efficient. I am stoked right now! 🤪
I prefer explicitly closing popups with the X (and esc
) so I don’t accidentally blow them away by brushing the mouse or dropping a raisin. If I’ve set up a zoom/filter/scroll position, it takes more than a single click to get the popup back to where it was, as opposed to most modals.
Dragging an item out of the popup and having the popup fade away so I can drop into the Board behind it is exactly what I had in mind, but was afraid to ask😬. I see no reason to change the darkness of the background since the Board will appear once the popup fades. Saving/recalling popups sounds great, too. But as much as I’d like to see these two features, they are squarely in my “OK to do later” column.
Changes that I hope are simple, and would like to consider before setting popups aside; priority order:
- [old bug, incomplete fix] We can now copy/paste items out of a popup, but Notes get lost.
- [new bug] Opening a popup sometimes automatically expands the Filter modal. Could be a desired behavior – if it were consistent. Clicking the popup away while the filter modal is still open makes it stick to the top-left of the Board after the popup disappears. I think this is new with the last update.
- [request] “clone to popup” command in the kebab for standard Panes; allows making a “disposable” copy of an existing Pane, great for experimenting or hunting for lost items without wrecking the Board.
- [request] “open in popup” button in the “tally box” modal for links/mirrors. Makes it much easier to inspect those items.
- [request] Make Popups persist on their Boards, so user can switch away to deal with a distraction and then return to the Board with popup still intact.
